The Titanic
The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that finished construction in 1912. The length of the Titanic is 269 meters, and the top cruising speed was 23 knots (about 43 km/h). The Titanic has 16 watertight compartments, and the ship has four large funnels (only three functional). Approximately 2,200 people boarded on its first voyage.
Essential Info.
Titanic's designer was Thomas Andrews, and the company that constructed it was Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. Its owner was White Star Line. It was built to be the height of comfort at sea. Titanic was one of three “Olympic-class” ships constructed to be the best for luxury and comfort.
Titanic was believed to be “unsinkable” because of safety standards and features of its time. It sank on April 14, 1912, on its first voyage from Southampton to New York because it collided with an iceberg. The metal sides bent after hitting the iceberg, letting water flood into six watertight compartments. The ship could only handle four being flooded, so it began to sink. The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, in the early morning hours taking over 1,500 lives with it. It was one of the deadliest marine disasters in history and led to major changes in ship safety rules.
